Depok, June 2008

They act like Papua’s people, even they are not Papua’s. They dressed just like them. But, they are’not the members of indigenous tribes from Papua. They were just an ordinary elementary school students from small city near Jakarta. They were compete to be the best of junior marching band in Depok.

Mereka bertingkah bak orang Papua. Para siswa sekolah dasar asal Depok ini berpakaian selayaknya anggota suku-suku asli Papua. Ya, itu mereka lakukan sebagai bagian dari atraksi gelar marching band pelajar tingkat Sekolah Dasar se-Kota Depok. Mereka sedang berkompetisi untuk menjadi yang terbaik.

Nice combination between urban and ethnic-traditional culture

Kombinasi antara budaya perkotaan dan etnik-tradisional.

Children always be an interesting object for photography. They have an amazing expression, even many of the them were too shame to be a model.

Anak-anak memang menggemaskan. Dan, selalu menjadi target bidikan kamera yang menarik. Ekspresi mereka spontan dan polos. Meski, ada juga yang malu-malu.

When I was looking around at the famous indigenous people in the Sasak village, near the hill of Rinjani (NTB), a boy wailed over. I surmised he did not convenient enough with my present. But, the another one quite convenient to be a model of my photograph. Thank you boys.

Sewaktu mau jeprat-jepret kegiatan bermain anak-anak yang tinggal di lereng Rinjani (NTB), seorang anak di antara mereka tiba-tiba menangis histeris. Entah kenapa? Tapi, sepertinya dia tidak nyaman dengan kehadiran kami. Tapi, justru, ekpresi tangisannya itu menjadi obyek yang menarik utk diabadikan.

Berbeda dengan teman si bocah, yang ternyata cuek-cuek saja dijadikan model dadakan.

Pemirsa, berikut ini dua jepretan oleh-oleh dari hasil jalan-jalan ke Gunung Rinjani.

I prefer not to untitled this photo album. Not many reason for that. Only one reason: because I didn’t know what is in her mind. She was nobody. She was one of many Maduranese woman who lived in the camp after the bloody racial conflict in Borneo. She can’t go back to Borneo, neither to Madura because she doesn’t have any family anymore in Madura.

a blind man: finally, he smile up :)

I was in the coastal fisherman village in Situbondo, East Java. I found many interested human pose for this photoblog. One of them, is a blind man who lived in the village. His feeling was in the blue. I don’t know whay suddenly he was smile up.

Thanks to God, we are not blind. But, even they blind they are always pray to thank you for being a human.

Deretan beberapa foto ini berkisah tentang kehidupan seorang pemuda buta di pantai Situbondo. Meskipun sempat termenung, si pemuda Buta akhirnya tersenyum juga.

Bersyukurlah, kita yang diberi kesempurnaan panca indera. Tapi, hebatnya lagi, meskipun mereka ternyata juga pandai bersyukur . “Bersyukur karena diberi kesempatan untuk menjadi manusia.”

Making a proportional photograph about people in psychotiq disability function condition was not eazy enough. You need more emphatic behaviour so they can accepted you as they part.

This photo album told about the lunatic rehabilitation camp in Semarang, Central Java. Because of they madness, they had to be jailed. This is not about criminal; this is about how to protect other people get hurt.

You can see the facial expression: so feel madness. Especially, the ladies. She famed as a trouble maker because disposes to hurt anybody.

Memotret mereka yang terkena nasib terganggu fungsi psikologisnya (psikotik) memang susah-susah mudah. Yang jelas, memerlukan empati agar foto yang dihasilkan tidak menjadi seolah-olah meledek mereka. Nah, yang itu saya belum bisa.

Dua postingan foto ini bercerita tentang mereka yang terpaksa harus dikurung lantaran kegilaan mereka yang sewaktu-waktu bisa melukai orang lain. Ya, si ibu yang wajahnya bersungut memang terkenal suka menyerang orang jika berada di luar teralis. Semoga mereka bisa segera lepas dari cobaan nan berat ini.

Indigenous Style versus Modern Style

In the first picture you can see two Lani’s. Lani is a second major tribe in Baliem Valley, Central Papua. You can see the contrast between them : the urbanized looking one and the urbanized one and the prehistoric style one. In other words, modern style versus indigenous style.

Meski sesama warga suku Lani, dua pria dalam foto itu memberi dua kesan yang berbeda: urbanized dan un-urbanized. Satu pria sudah menyesuaikan diri dengan budaya berbusana era kini. Satu lagi masih mempertahankan cara berbusana adat Lani.

Surabaya Undercover

I think, being the good guy is very important. But, it doesn’t mean you not allow to know anything about how the way hooker doing their live. For me, the point is what kind of motivation bring you there. So, the prostitution area is not forbidden area for me as long as I doing the right think over there.

Jadi orang alim dan saleh itu harus. Namun, bukan berarti menutup diri untuk tahu kehidupan malam yang berkonotasi kemaksiatan. Yang penting, kan niatnya.

When I went to Surabaya, I had to photograph some pictures about the prostitution activity at the city. The first destination is Gubernur Suryo Park. The insider informan told me, that even the City Hall not allowing any prostitution at the park, but you still can find hookers over there. So, when I saw a couple lady, I focus my lens to them. I dont thinks so that they are a clandestein hookers. That night, I catch some candid pictures.

Ketika ke Surabaya, saya tertarik memantau lelaku kehidupan segelintir kupu-kupu malam di kota itu. Perjalanan dimulai di Tugu Gubernur Suryo. Katanya di tempat ini, bisa kenalan dengan perempuan-perempuan bispak. Curiga sesuatu, kamera segera kuarahkan dengan cara candid (diam-diam).

I move to Bambu Kuning Monument. Wow.. I saw at least seven street hookers. Unfortunately, I cannot producing a good picture because they do not allowed me to bring any camera. So, I move to Dolly, the greatest berthel prostitution area in this country. I introduced my self as a journalist. So, I met the most key person over the area. He help me to do my job. Of course, I did it by candid operation.

Dari sana, ke kawasan Tugu Bambu Kuning. Wah, masih banyak juga yang mangkal. Sayang, nggak bisa ngambil gambar. Ya sudah akhirnya ke Dolly. Berbekal relasi sebagai jurnalis, saya coba kenalan dengan salah seorang key person di salah satu kompleks lokalisasi terbesar di Indonesia ini. Beberapa momen pun sempat kuabadikan. Lagi-lagi dengan cara diam-diam. Soalnya tidak enak, jika mencolok. akan mengganggu aktivitas orang-orang di sana.
